THE 1990S ARCHIVES PART III: CHINA 1993 CONSUMERISM FAIR

|The New History Group, active in Wuhan, was made up of artists, businessmen, and academics. They created mass-produced art products through a series of mutually beneficial corporate collaborations, including ten-thousand sets of Ren Jian’s Stamp-Collecting Jeans, which were brought to the China 1993 Consumerism Fair held at the Wangfujing McDonald’s in Beijing. The New History Group felt that traditional art and consumer goods no longer suited the new consumerism then taking China by storm, making their search for new media and materials a key challenge. This “manufactured art” attempted to leverage a symbiotic relationship with commercial interests to create products for social consumption, allowing their products to gain acceptance and break down the barrier between art and mass consumption to reach an intermediate state.
